The low carbon content of 316L makes it an excellent choice for welding. 316L SS pipe is a type of austenitic stainless steel. Adding too much carbon to stainless steel, however, promotes a phenomenon known as "sensitization." This causes chromium carbides to precipitate at grain boundaries, consuming chromium from adjacent regions. As a result, stainless steel is susceptible to intergranular corrosion.
